[No Meeting] 07-19-2012

Good afternoon, Hackers!

There will be no meeting this evening… because I’m getting married Saturday! We’ve still got people to see and stuff to do.

Since I will probably forget to send out an e-mail about it… there will be no meeting next week (07-26-2012). I’ll be at DEF CON in Las Vegas.

See you August 2nd!

Evenin’ Hackers!

Tonight, we’re doing a demo of Wireshark!

This nifty tool (formerly Ethereal) will allow you to analyze packet data from an interface (if it supports promiscuous mode), or from a file (i.e. tcpdump output).

Now… you might be thinking to yourself “why would I want to analyze packets from a network?” Aha! There are many reasons to inspect such things. For example… you could find out what your roommate is saying about you over that IM conversation they’re having, or SSNs and patient information flying in the clear (oh wait… sore subject). Point being, you can find a lot of stuff flying through those wires!

This meeting will be a little shorter than usual (1h rather than 2h)… we’ll see you in a few!

I’m sad to say that I must cancel yet another hacking meeting, due to wedding stuff. Casey and I have to meet with our photographer tonight at 5:30pm.

We’ll regroup for a fun-filled discussion next week!

Good afternoon Hackers!

This evening’s meeting is going to be a very special one… and one that I’m sure you’ll be highly disappointed if you miss!!!

We are having a little chat with -one- of the qualifying DEF CON CTF Qualifier teams. -First-, I’d like to thank the members of the team for taking time out of their busy schedules to talk us through some of  their solutions. This opportunity is truly -one- in a lifetime.

Ok… enough beating around the bush. Tonight, we have the unique opportunity to sit down with the members of Hates Irony (first-place team in this year’s DEF CON CTF Qualifier). The chat will be over Google Hangout, so you’ll be able to connect remotely if you have a Google account (e-mail me for details).

If you’re able to attend, I highly recommend it! I think you’ll be more than satisfied with the experience :)

Location & Time 6:00pm - 8:00pm Chat @ 7:00pm – Google Hangout 1151 McCarty Hall A http://campusmap.ufl.edu/?loc=0495

At tonight’s meeting, we’ll be discussing the WordPress Security Scanner. Developed by Ryan Dewhurst (ethicalhack3r), this powerful tool can help penetration testers check the security of WordPress installations, using a black box approach. While it’s only targeted at sites running WordPress (who uses WordPress, right? oh wait…), this scanner is no joke.

Come join us for discussion and demos!
